Trauma and PTSD

Facing what happened, at a pace that feels safe

Trauma can keep the past feeling close, long after the event itself has ended. Here we slow things down and work through it together, at a pace that stays under your control.

When the past stays present

Trauma does not always arrive as one clear memory. Often it shows up as a body that stays braced, sleep that will not settle, or a sharp reaction to something small others might not notice. Many people carry it quietly for years, building a life around it rather than moving through it.

PTSD can add its own weight, with intrusive memories, avoidance, and a nervous system that stays on guard. None of this means something is wrong with you: it is the mind and body doing their best to keep you safe, and understanding that pattern is often the first bit of relief. Teens can show it differently, through irritability, withdrawal, or trouble focusing, which I keep in mind with younger clients.

Signs you might notice

Everyone responds differently, but a handful of experiences come up again and again:

  • Memories or images that arrive uninvited
  • Sleep that feels broken or on alert
  • Avoiding places, people, or reminders of the event
  • Feeling numb, distant, or easily startled

The past can lose its grip without being erased.

How we work with it

We begin with steadiness: grounding skills, a clear sense of control over the pace, and no pressure to share more than you are ready to. As that footing grows, we turn toward the experience itself in a way that feels workable rather than flooding, drawing on CBT and DBT skills where they earn their place.

Sessions tend to feel practical and unhurried: building a plan for the week, practicing a skill together, or making sense of a reaction that caught you off guard. Diagnosis and medication questions belong with medical providers, and I am glad to coordinate with them. This is not a crisis service; if you need urgent help now, find it on the crisis resources page.
