Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Thoughts, feelings, and practical change

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, usually shortened to CBT, is a practical and present-focused way of understanding how your thoughts, feelings, and actions shape one another. In our work together I draw on CBT alongside a solution-focused approach, so our sessions stay grounded in what matters to you right now.

What CBT actually looks like

CBT rests on a straightforward idea. The way we read a situation shapes how we feel about it and what we do next, and those patterns can be noticed, questioned, and gently reworked. Rather than digging endlessly through the past, we pay attention to what is happening in your life today and try small, testable changes you can carry into an ordinary week.

Sessions are collaborative and down to earth. We name the patterns together, put a few ideas into practice between visits, and adjust based on what you genuinely notice rather than what looked tidy on paper. You set the direction, and I keep us moving at a pace that feels workable rather than overwhelming.

How I draw on CBT

  • Noticing patterns: We look at the thoughts that tend to arrive in hard moments and how they connect to feelings and choices.
  • Small experiments: You try manageable steps between sessions, and together we review what felt useful and what fell flat.
  • Skills you keep: The tools we practice are yours to reuse long after one particular worry has quieted down.
  • Room for context: We hold space for your history and your circumstances, so the work never treats you as a problem to be solved.

Noticing a pattern is the first quiet step toward working with it.

Is CBT a fit for you?

People often turn to CBT while working through anxiety, low mood, ongoing stress, and habits they would like to shift. It sits comfortably beside other approaches, and when strong emotions or relationships are part of the picture, I may bring in skills from ACT or DBT as well. Diagnosis and any questions about medication belong with your physician or prescriber, while our sessions stay centered on the steady, practical work of counseling.
