Grief and Loss

Room to grieve at your own pace

Grief is not a problem to be solved or a process with a tidy finish line. It is the shape love takes when someone or something is gone. Whether your loss is recent or years old, you deserve space to feel it fully, without being rushed.

Grief does not follow a schedule

There is no correct way to grieve and no timeline you are supposed to meet. Some days the loss feels distant, and then a song, a smell, or an empty chair brings it flooding back. Grief can also arrive for losses the world does not always name, like the end of a marriage, a job, a friendship, or a future you had quietly imagined. All of it is worth taking seriously.

People sometimes worry they are grieving wrong, or too long, or not enough. In our work there is no such thing, only your loss and what it asks of you.

What support can look like

Grief counseling is not about getting over anything or leaving your person behind. It is about finding a way to carry the loss that still leaves room for living. Together we make space for the hard feelings, the anger and guilt and longing that often come tangled together, and look at how to hold your memories in a way that honors them. Some people also want practical help with the changes loss sets in motion, and we can turn toward that when you are ready.

Grief is not something you move on from. It is something you slowly learn to carry.

Some of what people bring here

Grief touches nearly everything, so the work meets you wherever it hurts:

  • A recent loss: Steady company through the raw early weeks and months.
  • Old grief: Loss from long ago that never quite had room to be felt.
  • Complicated feelings: Relationships that were difficult, where mourning is not simple.
  • Loss beyond death: Divorce, illness, estrangement, or the quiet grief of a life that changed.

This is supportive counseling rather than medical care, so diagnosis or medication stays with your physician or prescriber. If grief ever pulls you toward harming yourself, please use the urgent options on the crisis resources page; this is not an emergency service.
