Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Make room for hard feelings and act on what matters

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, known as ACT, is about making room for difficult thoughts and feelings while you keep moving toward the things you care about. I weave ACT into a solution-focused approach, so the work stays close to the life you actually want to live.

The idea behind ACT

Much of the strain we carry comes from trying to control or silence uncomfortable inner experiences. ACT takes a different route. Instead of wrestling every anxious or painful thought to the ground, we practice noticing it, letting it be there, and choosing what to do next based on our values rather than our fear.

That does not mean giving up or resigning yourself to feeling bad. It means loosening the grip that hard thoughts can have, so more of your energy goes toward what you find meaningful. The practice is not about winning an argument with your mind. It is about changing how much authority those thoughts get to hold over your choices.

What we practice together

  • Defusion: We create a little distance from sticky thoughts, so they carry less weight in the moment.
  • Acceptance: We practice allowing difficult feelings to be present without letting them run the show.
  • Values: We get clear on what genuinely matters to you, in relationships, work, and daily life.
  • Committed action: We translate those values into small, doable steps you can take this week.

You can carry a hard feeling with you and still walk toward what you love.

When ACT tends to fit

Some people come to ACT feeling stuck in loops of worry or avoidance, and want a way to relate to those patterns that does not depend on making them vanish first. People often find ACT useful while working through anxiety, stress and burnout, grief, and the low points that come with big life changes. It works well on its own and alongside CBT or DBT skills when that suits you. This is outpatient counseling, so any diagnosis or medication questions stay with your medical provider, and together we focus on how you want to move through your days.
